Scam Victim Spends $50 To Buy The Crypto ATM He Was Scammed At After State Bans Kiosks

INDIANA - Brookville resident Adam Crypter was just another victim dealing with the aftermath of a scam. Crypter, who had lost $20,000 in a government imposter scam, knew he would never see the money again. The cash he had withdrawn had been deposited into a cryptocurrency ATM at JoeBob's Bait and Vape Shop. It was gone, in the ether, and in the digital pocket of the scammer who had posed as the FBI agent.

Adam blammed himself for his involvement in the scam. He had definitely learned from it and knew it was something he could recover from. But he hated that crypto ATM with a passion. It had made it so easy to send the money.

When the announcement came out that his state would ban crypto ATMs, Adam was esctatic. After the ban went into effect, he went back to JoeBob's and put a $20 bill on the counter.

"Please sell me that illegal device!" he exclaimed to the owner, pointing at the kiosk. JoeBob was reluctant at first, but eventually caved. After some haggling, Adam bought the kiosk for $50. Once JoeBob emptied the machine, it was loaded into Adam's truck.

Adam placed the crypto ATM in a field next to an old, broken down pickup. While it was a reminder of the loss he had taken, he took solace in the fact that it would never victimize another person again.

DISCLAIMER: While Adam's story is fictional, Indiana is the first state to ban crypto ATMs. Indiana's senate passed House Bill 1116 which was signed by Governor Mike Braun on March 9, 2026. Which state will be next?
